Our vision is to see a vibrant and empowered Afghan-Canadian Community and to ensure that:
- Members of the community are free of the stigma attached to mental health and addictions issues and;
- Individuals and families, when faced with such issues are aware that help and support is available and accessible for them and;
- Such individuals and/or families know that they need not suffer in isolation, nor live in fear of losing their loved ones to addictions and/or mental illnesses.
Guided by our vision, we are committed to promote mental health and mental well-being in the Afghan-Canadian Community through empowerment; and using a holistic and culturally sound approach that includes education, awareness training, referrals, direct counselling, and outreach and intervention programs.

Our Anti-Racism/Anti-Discrimination Policy
The Sabawoon Afghan Family Education and Counselling Centre (SAFE Counselling Centre) recognizes and values the diversity of the community we serve, and the fundamental human rights of all people. We acknowledge the barriers to education, employment, social, and economic opportunities faced by cultural, racial, and religious groups. SAFE is committed to working towards elimination of these barriers by providing culturally, linguistically, and religiously appropriate services to the community we serve. We believe in, and respect the dignity and integrity of every individual and their right to have access to services without any form of discrimination. The Anti-Racism/Anti-Discrimination policy of SAFE Counselling Centre applies wherever our services and programs are provided; it applies to all who provide service to SAFE Counselling Centre, individuals we provide service to, volunteers, Board members, staff, and students.
SAFE Counselling Centre’s mission is to promote the mental health of all people and specifically the mental health and mental well being of the Afghan Canadian community with the use of a holistic and culturally sound approach. In keeping with our mission, we are committed to providing an environment that is free from prejudice and discrimination based on race, gender, class, ability, religion, and sexual orientation. Acts of prejudice, discrimination, and harassment will not be tolerated.
SAFE Counselling Centre is committed to the development and implementation of practices, policies, services, and education that will:
- Respect the diversity of Canadian society, as well as the diversity of the Afghan community
- respect the family values and the unique cultural heritage of the Afghan community in Canada
